There are three kinds of maps: Trails Illustrated, United States Geological Survey (USGS) quagrangles and U.S. Forest Service. These maps (Forest Service) give a good overview of a segments location, surroundings, and accessibility, but they do not lend themselves to precise navigation. The best maps for that purpose arethe topographical quadrangles put out by the USGS. The scale for USGS maps is 1:24:00, and the detail is excellent for navigation if you know how to use a map and compass. However, there are almost 100 of these maps for the entire (Colorado) CDT, and they cost $5 a piece. There are also 1:100,000 maps of Colorado available through USGS. Go to http://www.usgs.gov for ordering information.

The maps from Trails Illustrated (TI) are the best value. They are waterproof, tear proof, and more up to date than the others. Each one (with a few exceptions) is a reproduction of eight USGS maps and sells for around $10. Some TI maps cover even more territory, such as the one for Weminuche Wilderness, which includes all 13 USGS maps required for that area. TI maps use a smaller scale than the USGS maps and is a little more difficult to obtain precise readings from them, but they are generally sufficient for hiking the CDT.
