Map List

Forest Service maps give a good overview of a segment’s location, access roads, and private land, but they do not lend themselves to precise navigation. For navigation, use the 1:24,000 topographical quadrangles put out by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). USGS maps show terrain accurately, but are out of date in regard to trails and roads. For most of Idaho/Montana CDT, you need to carry USGS maps, Forest Service maps, and a compass.

There are 117 USGS topographical maps for the Idaho/Montan CDT, plus 12 more that are recommended for access information. Reduce your expenses by eliminating the quadrangle for Glacier National Park, Anaconda-Pintler, Scapegoat, and Bob Marshall Wilderness areas. The trails are more clearly marked in these areas and other, detailed maps are available. Request wilderness area maps from the Forest Service.

There is one Trails Illustrated map available, Glacier National Park. It is waterproof, tear-proof, and more up-to-date than the USGS topos.
